On March 2, 2015, Fort Leonard Wood hosted the Army's Listening Session regarding their Finding of No Significant Impact from the 2014 Supplemental Programmatic Environmental Assessment (SPEA). The SPEA called for Fort Leonard Wood to possibly lose 5,400 Army jobs in the coming years. Thanks to our intense work with local and regional organizations, as well as local, regional, state, and national elected officials and leaders, we conducted a very successful Listening Session. Approximately, four months after our Listening Session was held, the Army announced that Fort Leonard Wood would lose a significantly lower number of troops than originally forecasted. The Sustainable Ozarks Partnership (SOP) was created based on a need that was uncovered during research for the Fort Leonard Wood Integrated Strategic Sustainability Plan (ISSP). To view the most recent Fort Leonard Wood Sustainability Annual Report, click here.
Our region’s economic vitality is dependent on a thriving Fort Leonard Wood (FLW). Based on the findings from the ISSP, the SOP was created to focus on encouraging economic development in the region and to provide insight to those on the federal level about the progress of our region. The SOP created our own Strategic Plan, which includes measurable goals for our work in the Fort Leonard Wood region. They are:
- Achieve national recognition for the region as an excellent place for people to live, work and play and for businesses to prosper.
- Ensure that FLW continues to be an enduring installation that grows with expanding or new Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or other federal missions.
- Be a catalyst for positive change for citizens and businesses throughout the region.
- Through partnership, help reduce Fort Leonard Wood’s life cycle costs, making Fort Leonard Wood more valuable to DoD.
One of the many ways we support the region is through integrating veterans in our economic development initiatives, like our Veterans to Farmers program. For more information on the program, click here.
